Back-to-School

The rush of registration is over, the textbooks are off the floor of the library, and we’re already a humming hub of activity. We’ve got some new titles in our fiction section to check out. The Red Pyramid, by Rick Riordan is a fantasy adventure set among the artifacts of Egypt. We have the sequel to Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, and we’re looking forward next week to Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

With changes in our staffing, we are relying on students to help out at our circulation desk. We already have some enthusiastic volunteers. Thanks Tessa and Nadine for working during your brunch and lunch to help keep our books circulating. If you’re interested in helping out stop by the library for an application form. We’ll be interviewing volunteers next week.

Summer Reading!

It’s a perfect time to try reading a new genre. In case you haven’t tried it, check out The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It’s the first in a trilogy of high adventure and suspense-filled sci-fi. It’s a little bit of Survivor meets The Giver. Follow the excitement as Katniss and her district partner fight for their lives against eleven other pairs in the Hunger games. If that doesn’t appeal, you might be interested in some historical fiction. With the sixth book in her Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series finally coming out this June, you might want to check out Wolf Brother, the first book in this series. Set in the forests of Europe six thousand years ago, it is the adventure of a young boy raised by his father away from the clans in the forest and orphaned at the age of twelve. He discovers that he can communicate with wolves, and he and his wolf companion go in search of the source of evil that has the forest in its grip because he is the one chosen to defeat it. If you’re just looking for a fun summer read, check out The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale about Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall. The title of this story pretty much sums up the adventures of the Penderwick sisters, an eclectic group of sisters spending their summer vacation seeking adventure on the beautiful estate of Arundel. So get to your local library and check out the cornucopia of interesting reads available to you.
